§ 7636 Parent-Child Relationship Judgment

Key Takeaways

  • •A court's decision about whether someone is a parent or not is final and applies everywhere.
  • •This decision can't be changed or ignored in other cases, except for one specific crime (not paying child support).
  • •If the court says someone is the parent, they have all the rights and responsibilities of a parent.

Example

A man is told by a court that he is the father of a child.

This means he must support the child, and the child can get things like inheritance or benefits from him. Even if he later goes to another court for something else, they have to accept that he is the father. The only time this doesn’t count is if he is accused of not paying child support.
