§ 7111 Emancipation Benefits Limitation

Key Takeaways

  • •If a kid under 18 becomes legally independent (emancipated), they don’t automatically get extra help from the government.
  • •They only get the same help they would have gotten before becoming independent.
  • •This rule is about money or support from the state, not about other rights like getting a job or renting a place.

Example

A 16-year-old gets emancipated and thinks they can now get food stamps or cash aid from the government just because they’re on their own.

The law says no—just being emancipated doesn’t mean they get extra help. They only get the same support they would have gotten before, like if they were still living with their parents.
