§ 1833 Family Dispute Petition Requirements

This law explains what you need to include in a court petition when you have a problem with your spouse or partner and need the court's help to fix it or settle things peacefully.

Key Takeaways

  • •You have to say what the fight is about and ask the court to help you solve it.
  • •You must include names and ages of any kids involved.
  • •You have to give names and addresses of everyone involved in the problem.
  • •If there was violence at home, you have to mention it, but you don’t need to explain everything that happened.

Example

A married couple is fighting a lot and can't agree on how to take care of their kids or money.

Either one or both of them can go to court and file a petition. They have to say what the problem is, give their names and addresses, and mention their kids' names and ages. If there was any violence at home, they have to mention that too, but they don’t need to give all the details.
