Key Takeaways

  • •Spiny lobster fishing is important for California's money and jobs.
  • •The law wants to teach people why lobster is good food and how to keep lobsters around for a long time.
  • •A special group (commission) will help make rules to protect lobsters and help fishermen.

§ 79151 Spiny Lobster Fishery Management

The production of spiny lobster for domestic consumption and export is one of the leading segments of the state’s commercial fishing industry. To maintain this significant contribution to the state’s economy and public well-being, there is a need to make regulators aware of unique economic factors affecting the spiny lobster fishery and how these factors can be integrated with appropriate management measures to protect a sustainable spiny lobster resource. In addition, there is a need to make consumers and the general public aware of the nutritional value of seafood, the high quality of spiny lobster produced by the industry, and the opportunities available to balance spiny lobster production and protection of the natural marine resources of California. The activities made possible by the establishment of a commission will meet this need and further the interests of the industry and the state. (Added by Stats. 2017, Ch. 503, Sec. 1. (AB 944) Effective January 1, 2018. Provisions operative or inoperative as prescribed in Sections 79180.5, 79181.5, and 79195 et. seq. Repealed conditionally pursuant to Section 79182.5.)
