§ 78681 Tomato Handler Packout Data

Key Takeaways

  • •The law helps stop unfair tricks in California's tomato business, like lying or hiding info.
  • •The people who handle tomatoes must share info about how many tomatoes they pack and their quality, but their names and details are kept secret.
  • •Only big-picture info, like total numbers or averages, can be shared publicly—not individual reports.
  • •The way this info is collected and shared must be approved by the secretary.

Example

A tomato farmer wants to know how many big, red tomatoes other farms are packing this year.

The law lets the farmer get general info, like the average number of tomatoes packed, but they can’t find out exactly how many a specific farm packed—those details stay secret.
