§ 77937 Commission Quorum And Voting

Key Takeaways

  • •A quorum means more than half of the voting members must be there to make decisions.
  • •If a member is missing, their backup can step in to help reach a quorum.
  • •Once there's a quorum, most decisions need more than half of the people there to agree.

Example

Imagine a school club with 5 members. To decide on a trip, at least 3 members must be present (that’s a quorum).

If only 2 members show up, they can’t make decisions. But if one member is missing, their backup can come instead to help reach 3 members. Then, if 2 out of those 3 agree on the trip, it’s approved.

Any alternate member to any producer member may serve in the absence of any other member if that member’s alternate is also absent, if that action is necessary to establish a quorum. Except as provided in Sections 77914 and 78002, the vote of a majority of the members present at a meeting at which there is a quorum shall constitute the act of the commission. (Added by Stats. 1990, Ch. 495, Sec. 1. Effective August 10, 1990.)
