§ 76952 Salmon Vessel Operator Referendum

Key Takeaways

  • •This law only starts working if enough salmon fishers vote in a special vote.
  • •At least 40% of all salmon fishers must vote in this special vote.
  • •For the law to pass, either: 65% of voters say 'yes' AND those voters caught more than half of last year's salmon, OR 51% of voters say 'yes' AND those voters caught 65% of last year's salmon.

Example

Imagine 100 salmon fishers in California. Only 40 of them vote in a special vote about new fishing rules.

If 26 of those 40 voters (65%) say 'yes' to the new rules, AND those 26 fishers caught more than half of all salmon last year, then the new rules start. Or, if just 21 of those 40 voters (51%) say 'yes', but those 21 caught 65% of all salmon last year, the rules also start.
