§ 62568 Secretary Debt Recovery Actions

Key Takeaways

  • •If you owe money to the government, they can come after you to get it back.
  • •If the government says you owe a certain amount, it’s assumed to be true unless you can prove otherwise.
  • •You have to show proof if you think the government is wrong about what you owe.

Example

You didn’t pay a fine for a traffic ticket, and the government says you owe $500.

The government can take you to court to get the $500. They just have to say you owe it, and it’s up to you to prove you don’t.
