§ 30521 Spay/Neuter Deposit Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •When you adopt a dog, you might pay extra money (between $40 and $75) to make sure the dog gets spayed or neutered.
  • •You can get this money back if you show proof the dog was spayed or neutered within 30 days.
  • •If you don’t show proof in time, the shelter keeps the money to help other animals.
  • •The shelter uses this money for spay/neuter programs, teaching people about pet overpopulation, and checking that adopted pets are fixed.

Example

You adopt a dog from a shelter and pay a $50 deposit for spaying/neutering.

If you take the dog to the vet and show the shelter the paperwork within 30 days, you get your $50 back. If you don’t, the shelter keeps the money to help other dogs and cats.
