§ 27636 Egg Quality Labeling Standards

Key Takeaways

  • •You can't sell eggs as 'fresh' if they're not good quality (Grade A).
  • •You can't call eggs 'fresh' if they've been in cold storage for more than 30 days.
  • •Selling old or low-quality eggs as fresh is against the law.

Example

A grocery store labels and sells eggs as 'fresh farm eggs' even though they've been stored in a refrigerator for 45 days.

This is breaking the law because the eggs are too old to be called 'fresh.' They must be sold as something else.
