§ 24127 Slaughter Animal Inspection Fees

Key Takeaways

  • •If you send 15 or more animals to be killed for meat, you pay $25 plus up to $10 per animal for an inspection.
  • •If you send fewer than 15 animals, you pay only what the inspection actually costs.
  • •The inspection must happen within 24 hours before shipping for big groups, or right before loading for small groups.
  • •The money from these fees goes to the Department of Food and Agriculture to help pay for these checks.

Example

A farmer sends 20 cows to be slaughtered.

The farmer must pay $25 plus up to $10 for each cow, so the total fee could be up to $25 + ($10 x 20) = $225. The cows must be inspected within 24 hours before they are shipped.
