§ 1314 Community Reputation Evidence

Key Takeaways

  • •People in a town can talk about when someone was born, got married, got divorced, or died, even if they didn’t see it happen.
  • •This kind of talk is allowed in court, even though it’s usually just what people heard from others.
  • •It only works if the person lived in that town when people were talking about it.

Example

Your neighbor tells everyone in town that you got married last year, even though they weren’t at your wedding.

If someone in court needs to prove when you got married, your neighbor can say what they heard, even if it’s just gossip.
