§ 6523 Presidential Candidate Nomination Papers

Key Takeaways

  • •If you want to be on the presidential primary ballot but aren't picked by a big group, you can still try.
  • •You need to get signatures from voters who are part of the American Independent Party.
  • •The number of signatures you need is at least 1% of all the people in that party.
  • •The count of how many people are in the party is checked 135 days before the election.

Example

Imagine you want to run for president in the primary election, but your party didn’t pick you as their main candidate.

You can still get on the ballot if you collect enough signatures from voters in the American Independent Party. If there are 100,000 people in that party, you’d need at least 1,000 signatures (1% of 100,000).
