§ 18310 Voter Bribery Prohibition

This law says you can't give or get money or anything valuable to influence how someone votes, before, during, or after an election.

Key Takeaways

  • •No paying or receiving money to sway a vote at any time around an election.
  • •The rule works even if the money is given through another person.
  • •Breaking the rule can lead to a prison sentence of about 16 months to three years.

Example

A campaign worker hands a voter $20 and says, "Vote for our candidate and you’ll get this cash."

Because the money is given to change how the person votes, the law says that is illegal and could send the worker to jail.
