§ 15204 Public Ballot Counting Access

This law says anyone can watch the ballot counting, but only election workers who are hired for the job can touch the ballot boxes, and the computer area can be limited to people the elections official approves.

Key Takeaways

  • •The public may watch the counting of ballots.
  • •Only election workers hired for the job may touch ballot containers.
  • •The area with vote‑counting computers can be limited to people the elections official authorizes.

Example

A community member goes to the school gym where votes are being counted and watches the process.

The person can look at the counting, but they cannot pick up or move any ballot box. Only the election staff can handle the boxes, and the computers used to tally votes are kept away from the public unless the elections official says otherwise.
