§ 12304 Precinct Board Composition Rules

This law says each voting precinct must have at least one inspector and two clerks, and can add more clerks depending on how many voters are registered in that precinct.

Key Takeaways

  • •Every precinct must have at least 1 inspector and 2 clerks.
  • •More clerks can be added based on the number of registered voters.
  • •The rule started working on January 1, 2005.

Example

A precinct has 3,500 registered voters. The elections official decides that one extra clerk can be added for every 1,000 voters.

The precinct must have the minimum of one inspector and two clerks. Because there are 3,500 voters, the precinct can add three more clerks (one for each full 1,000 voters). So the board ends up with one inspector and five clerks.

How to Calculate

Additional clerks = ⌊ Registered Voters ÷ Voters‑per‑clerk ratio ⌋

  1. Find the Voters‑per‑clerk ratio that the elections official sets (e.g., 1,000 voters per extra clerk).
  2. Divide the total number of registered voters by that ratio.
  3. Drop any fraction (round down) to get a whole‑number count of extra clerks.

Precinct with 3,500 registered voters, ratio = 1,000 voters per extra clerk.

Result: Additional clerks = ⌊3500 ÷ 1000⌋ = ⌊3.5⌋ = 3 extra clerks
