§ 1202 Presidential Primary Consolidation

This rule says that every four years, the presidential primary and the state’s regular primary happen on the same day, which is the first Tuesday after the first Monday in March.

Key Takeaways

  • •The combined primary only happens in years like 2020, 2024, 2028, etc.
  • •It is always held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in March.
  • •Voters get to pick the presidential candidate and state candidates in one election.

Example

In 2024, voters go to the polls on March 5 to vote for both the president and their state candidates at the same time.

Because 2024 can be divided by four, the law makes the two primaries happen together on that March date, so voters only need to vote once for both sets of races.
