§ 88137 Community College Merit Employment

Key Takeaways

  • •If a community college is in the same area as a city and county, and that city and county has a merit system for hiring non-teaching staff, the college must follow that system.
  • •The college must give these employees all the rights that the city and county's merit system provides.
  • •The college board can still decide what jobs each employee does.

Example

A community college in San Francisco needs to hire a janitor.

Since San Francisco has a merit system for hiring, the college must follow San Francisco's rules for hiring the janitor and give them the same rights as other city employees. But the college board can still decide what the janitor's specific duties will be.
