§ 87018 Military Leave Pay Supplement

Key Takeaways

  • •If you work at a community college and get called for military duty, your job can give you extra money to make up the difference between your military pay and your normal salary for up to 180 days.
  • •You also keep getting the same work benefits (like health insurance) as if you were still working, unless the company providing the benefit says no.
  • •Your boss (the school board) has to agree to give you these extra benefits.

Example

A community college teacher gets called to serve in the National Guard for 6 months.

The teacher’s military pay is $3,000 a month, but their normal teaching salary is $5,000. The college will pay them an extra $2,000 each month so they don’t lose money. They also keep their health insurance and other work benefits while they’re away.
