§ 7053 Local Agency Political Corruption Ban

Key Takeaways

  • •You can't use your job or power in a local agency to help or hurt someone else's job or pay just because they support or don't support a certain person or party.
  • •You can't promise or threaten to change someone's job, pay, or position if they do or don't do something political for you.
  • •This rule applies to anyone who works for or wants to work for a local agency, like a city or county office.

Example

A city manager tells an employee, 'If you don't vote for my friend in the election, I'll make sure you don't get that promotion.'

This is against the law because the city manager is using their power to threaten the employee's job to get them to vote a certain way.
