§ 7004 Retirement System Definitions

• •A 'certificated employee' is a teacher or school worker who is part of the State Teachers’ Retirement System.
• •The 'school district' is the last place the teacher worked and paid into the retirement system before retiring.
• •A 'spouse' is defined by another part of the law (Section 22171).

A teacher works in a school district for 20 years and then retires.

The school district where they last worked is the one that counts for their retirement benefits. Their husband or wife, as defined by the law, may also get some benefits.
