§ 70033 Dream Program Loan Eligibility

Key Takeaways

  • •This law helps some students in California get loans for college if they meet certain rules.
  • •To get the loan, the student must: not pay extra tuition for being from out-of-state, fill out a special form called the Dream Act Application, be in school at least half-time, need money for school, and not be in trouble with the law or owe money on other student loans.
  • •The student must also promise in writing that they don’t owe money on any old student loans.
  • •The school and the state check everything before giving the loan to make sure the student follows all the rules.

Example

A student named Maria wants to go to college in California but doesn’t have a lot of money. She came to the U.S. when she was young and doesn’t have to pay extra tuition because of another law. She fills out the Dream Act Application and gets accepted into a college program. She goes to class at least half-time and does well in her classes. She doesn’t owe money on any old loans and isn’t in jail.

Maria can get a loan from the DREAM Program because she follows all the rules: she doesn’t pay extra tuition, fills out the right form, goes to school enough, needs the money, and isn’t in trouble. The school and the state will check everything and then give her the loan to help pay for college.
