§ 68074 Military Dependent Tuition Residency

Key Takeaways

  • •If your parent or spouse is in the military and lives in California, you pay the cheaper in-state tuition at California colleges.
  • •If your military parent or spouse gets moved out of California or retires, you still keep the cheap tuition as long as you stay in the same college without taking a long break.
  • •This rule is only about tuition costs, not other things like scholarships or housing.

Example

A student's dad is in the Army and stationed in California. The student goes to a California state university and pays in-state tuition. Then, the dad gets orders to move to Texas.

Even though the dad is no longer in California, the student can keep paying the cheaper in-state tuition as long as they stay enrolled in the same university without stopping.
