§ 52177 Bilingual Education Program Oversight

Key Takeaways

  • •The school boss must make sure there are enough teachers who speak two languages to help kids who don’t speak English well.
  • •Teachers and staff must be trained to help kids who don’t speak English well.
  • •There must be a special team in the school department just for helping kids who don’t speak English well.
  • •Schools must give kids who don’t speak English well the same good education as kids who speak English, and they must check every school at least once every three years to make sure they’re doing it right.

Example

A school has kids who speak Spanish at home and are still learning English. The school gets extra money from the state to help these kids.

The school boss must make sure there are teachers who speak both Spanish and English to help these kids learn. The school must also use the extra money the right way to give these kids the same good education as the other kids. If they don’t, the school boss’s team will visit the school to check and help fix the problem.
