§ 51264 School Staff Prevention Training

Key Takeaways

  • •The state helps schools train teachers and staff to stop gang violence and drug/alcohol problems.
  • •Schools should work together and share resources to avoid doing the same work twice.
  • •The state helps schools get money from the government for these training programs.
  • •Schools are encouraged to include gang and drug prevention plans in their bigger school safety plans.

Example

A middle school wants to teach its teachers how to spot signs of gang activity or drug use among students.

The state will give the school guidelines on how to train the teachers. The school can also ask the state for help to create a training program and even get money to pay for it. If the school already has a safety plan, they should add this training to it.

(a) The State Department of Education shall prepare and distribute to school districts and county offices of education guidelines for incorporating in-service training in gang violence and drug and alcohol abuse prevention for teachers, counselors, athletic directors, school board members, and other educational personnel into the staff development plans of all school districts and county offices of education. (c) The department shall assist school districts and county offices of education in qualifying for the receipt of federal and state funds to support their gang violence and drug and alcohol abuse prevention in-service training programs. (d) Each school that chooses to utilize the provisions of this article related to in-service training in gang violence and drug and alcohol abuse prevention, is encouraged to develop a single plan to strengthen its gang violence and drug and alcohol abuse prevention efforts.
