§ 49456 Health Defect Parent Notification

Key Takeaways

  • •If a school finds a health problem in a child (not about eyes), they tell the parents to fix it but can't say which doctor to go to.
  • •If the problem is about eyes, the school must use a special form to tell parents, and still can't pick a doctor for them.
  • •The school can suggest going to a public clinic or hospital for help, but nothing private.

Example

A school nurse checks a kid and finds they have trouble hearing.

The school will tell the parents to get it checked, but they won’t say ‘go to Dr. Smith.’ They can say ‘try the city health clinic’ if they want.
