§ 49429 School Telehealth Mental Health

Key Takeaways

  • •Schools in California can use video calls (telehealth) to help kids with mental health problems, like feeling very sad or worried.
  • •The state made rules about who can help kids with these video calls, how to keep their information private, and how schools can pay for it.
  • •Parents must say it's okay before their kid can get this help through video calls at school.
  • •The rules were supposed to be ready by the end of 2022, but only if the state had enough money to do it.

Example

A 12-year-old student feels very anxious and has trouble focusing in class. The school sets up a video call with a therapist during school hours.

The school follows the state's rules for telehealth. They make sure the therapist is qualified, get permission from the student's parents, and use a secure video call to protect the student's privacy. The school might also use special funds to pay for the computer and internet needed for these calls.
