§ 47606 Districtwide Charter Conversion

Key Takeaways

  • •A school district can turn all its schools into charter schools if at least half of the teachers agree and sign a petition.
  • •The petition must include a plan for kids who don’t want to go to charter schools, so they have another school to attend.
  • •The petition must follow all the rules listed in another part of the law (Sections 47605(c), (d), (e), (f), and (g)).
  • •The final decision to approve the petition is made by both the Superintendent of Public Instruction and the State Board of Education together.

Example

Imagine a small town where most of the teachers want to change all the schools into charter schools.

If at least half of the teachers in the town sign a petition asking for this change, and the petition includes a plan for kids who don’t want to go to charter schools, then the town’s school district can ask the state to approve the change. The state’s top school boss and the school board will decide together if it’s allowed.
