§ 46142 Minimum Schoolday Calculation

Key Takeaways

  • •Schools can average two days of class time to meet the daily minimum.
  • •If the average of two days is 240 minutes (4 hours) or more, it’s okay even if one day is shorter (but not less than 180 minutes).
  • •This rule doesn’t mean the school gets more money from the state.

Example

A high school has a short day on Friday with only 180 minutes of class, but the next day (Monday) has 300 minutes.

The school adds Friday (180) and Monday (300) to get 480 minutes. Dividing by 2 gives 240 minutes, so it meets the rule even though Friday was short.

(a) The minimum schoolday in any junior high school or high school described in Section 46141 may be computed by determining the number of minutes of attendance in any two consecutive schooldays and dividing that number by two. If the resulting quotient is 240 or more, the pupils shall be deemed to have complied with Section 46141, even if the number of minutes attended in any one schoolday is less than 240, but not less than 180. (b) No computation authorized by this section shall result in any increase in state apportionments. (Amended by Stats. 1994, Ch. 922, Sec. 101. Effective January 1, 1995.)
