§ 35706 School District Formation Review

Key Takeaways

  • •The county committee has 120 days to decide if they approve or disapprove a petition to create new school districts or change existing ones.
  • •The 120-day countdown starts after they check if the changes will hurt the environment or not.
  • •If the petition meets certain conditions (like in Section 35710), the committee must also decide on it within this time.

Example

A group of parents wants to split their big school district into two smaller ones so their kids can go to a school closer to home.

The parents submit a petition to the county committee. The committee then has 120 days to decide if they approve or disapprove this change. The 120 days start after they check if splitting the district will cause any environmental problems.
