§ 24105 Disability Retirement Effective Date

Key Takeaways

  • •You can choose when your disability retirement pay starts, but there are rules.
  • •You must fill out the right forms and send them in.
  • •Your retirement pay can't start before you stop working or before your application is received.
  • •If you keep working after your retirement is approved, you must tell them when you'll stop, or you might not get the pay.

Example

A teacher gets hurt and can't work anymore. She applies for disability retirement.

She fills out the forms and picks a start date for her retirement pay. But if she keeps teaching after her retirement is approved and doesn't tell them when she'll stop, she might not get her retirement money.
