§ 17286 Non-School Public Building Definition

Key Takeaways

  • •If a building is mostly used for things like jails, hospitals, or forests, it’s not called a 'school building' even if some teaching happens there.
  • •The main purpose of the building decides if it’s a school, not the little bit of teaching that might happen inside.
  • •This rule is for buildings run by the city or county, not private places.

Example

A county hospital has a small room where nurses teach first aid once a week.

Even though teaching happens there, the hospital is not called a 'school building' because its main job is to help sick people, not to be a school.
