§ 17047 Special Education Facility Space

Key Takeaways

  • •Schools get extra space for special education classes based on the type of disability.
  • •The space allowed depends on how many kids are in the class and what they need (like toilets or therapy rooms).
  • •Small schools can mix different types of special needs kids in one class to save space.
  • •No new special education classrooms are built unless at least 1/3 of the required number of kids need it.

Example

A school wants to build a new classroom for kids with autism.

The law says each autism classroom can have up to 6 kids and needs 1,160 square feet (1,080 for the class + 80 for toilets). If the school has 2 new kids with autism, they can’t build a new room yet because they need at least 2 more kids (1/3 of 6) to qualify.
