§ 16722 State Apportionment Interest Calculation

Key Takeaways

  • •The state gives money to school districts and keeps track of how much is owed back.
  • •If the district doesn't pay back the money on time, they have to pay extra money called interest.
  • •The interest starts adding up from the day the state sends the money until July 1st of the next year.
  • •After July 1st, the interest keeps growing every year until the district pays back everything.

Example

A school district gets $100,000 from the state to build a new playground. They don't pay it back on time.

The state will charge the district extra money (interest) starting from the day they got the $100,000 until July 1st of the next year. If they still don't pay, the interest keeps adding up every year until they pay everything back.
