§ 16502 State Project Housing Requirements

This law defines special terms used when the state builds big projects that bring lots of new people to an area, like workers and their families. It explains who gets help with schools and housing when this happens.

Key Takeaways

  • •If the state builds something big (like a dam or road) and lots of workers move in, the governor can say it’s a 'state project' to help the town.
  • •Kids whose parents work on the project (or for the companies hired) get special help with schools.
  • •The law lists who counts as a 'parent' (like guardians) and what 'school project' means.

Example

The state builds a new highway, and suddenly 1,000 workers with kids move to a small town that only has one tiny school.

The town can ask the governor to call this a 'state project' so they can get extra money to build more schools for all the new kids.

(h) “Project children” means children of parents who have come to the district subsequent to the start of the state project and who are employed by the State of California or the federal government in connection with a state project and children of parents employed by any contractor or subcontractor of a state project. (i) “Indirect project children” means children of parents who have come to the district subsequent to the start of the state project and who are not employed by a contractor or subcontractor of a state project but who are children in the area in addition to those which would be expected as a result of normal development and growth of the area as determined pursuant to regulations of the director which he or she is hereby authorized to adopt.
