§ 15795 District Boundary Change Notice

This law says that when a school district’s borders change or it gets merged into another district, the county superintendent must send a written report to the state board within 10 days, and then the board must quickly tell the Controller about the change.

Key Takeaways

  • •The county superintendent must file a written certificate within 10 days of any annexation or boundary change.
  • •The certificate must list the effective date, the area affected, and the new district name(s).
  • •The state board must promptly notify the Controller with the date, the old and new district names, and the funding (apportionment) that is affected.

Example

A tiny school district called Oak Valley is merged into the larger Pine County district because the state redraws the district lines.

The county superintendent for Oak Valley has to file a certificate with the state board within 10 days that says when the merger happened, which area is affected, and that it’s now part of Pine County. After getting the certificate, the board sends a notice to the Controller with the merger date, the names of Oak Valley and Pine County, and which funding pieces are affected.
