§ 14007 School Funding Per Pupil

This law tells the state controller to move a set amount of money each year from the main state fund into the school fund, based on how many students attended school the year before.

Key Takeaways

  • •The controller must send money to the school fund every year.
  • •The amount is based on 9 cents for each student counted in average daily attendance the year before.
  • •All elementary, high, and unified districts and county superintendents are included in the count.

Example

A state has 200,000 students who went to school every day last year.

The controller will calculate 9 cents for each of those 200,000 students and send that total to the school fund to help pay for schools this year.

How to Calculate

Transfer amount = $0.09 × (total average daily attendance of all students in the prior fiscal year)

  1. Find the total number of students who were counted as present on an average day last year.
  2. Multiply that number by $0.09 (nine cents).
  3. The product is the amount of money the controller must move from the General Fund to the State School Fund.

If the state counted 150,000 students in average daily attendance last year:

Result: $13,500 (150,000 × $0.09 = $13,500)
