§ 101041 University Medical Education Funding

This law puts $890 million from bond sales into a special fund for the University of California and a specific college, and says $200 million of that must go to improve medical education with telehealth.

Key Takeaways

  • •The law creates a $890 million fund for UC and a named college.
  • •At least $200 million must be used for medical‑education projects that focus on telehealth.
  • •The money can pay for new buildings, renovations, equipment (with a 10‑year life), land, and pre‑construction planning.

Example

The university wants to build a new telehealth simulation lab for medical students.

Because the law set aside $200 million for telehealth projects, the university can use part of that money to pay for the lab, its equipment, and the plans needed to build it.

How to Calculate

Portion for telehealth = (Amount for telehealth ÷ Total bond proceeds) × 100

  1. Find the total money put into the fund – $890,000,000.
  2. Find the amount earmarked for telehealth – $200,000,000.
  3. Divide the telehealth amount by the total amount.
  4. Multiply the result by 100 to get a percentage.

What percent of the fund is dedicated to telehealth?

Result: 22.47% (because 200,000,000 ÷ 890,000,000 = 0.2247, and 0.2247 × 100 = 22.47%)
