§ 8505 Securities Intermediary Payment Duties

Key Takeaways

  • •If a company pays out money (like dividends) for stocks or investments, the middleman (like a broker) must try to get that money for you.
  • •The middleman can follow what you both agreed on, or if there’s no agreement, they must try their best like any reasonable business would.
  • •If the middleman gets the money from the company, they *must* give it to you—they can’t keep it.

Example

You own stocks in a company, and they pay out $100 to all stockholders. Your broker (the middleman) gets the $100 for you.

The broker has to give you that $100—they can’t keep it or forget about it. If they don’t, they’re breaking the rules.
