§ 8842 Contractor Work Stoppage Rights

Key Takeaways

  • •If you're the main person hired to do a job (like building a house), you can stop working if something goes wrong.
  • •This right to stop work doesn't take away any other rights you have by law.
  • •This rule was added in 2010 and started working in 2012.

Example

You hire a builder to make a new kitchen. The builder starts work but you don't pay them as agreed.

The builder can stop working on your kitchen because they have the right to stop if you don't pay. They can also take other actions, like suing you, because this law doesn't take away their other rights.
