§ 7672 Cremated Remains Disposer Registration

Key Takeaways

  • •You can't get rid of someone's ashes (from cremation or hydrolysis) unless you're registered with the state.
  • •This rule doesn't apply to cemeteries, funeral homes, or people handling ashes for their family (if they do it less than 10 times a year).
  • •This law will go away on January 1, 2027.

Example

Your grandma passes away, and your family wants to scatter her ashes in her favorite park.

If you're just doing this for your grandma, you don't need to be registered. But if someone starts a business to scatter ashes for lots of families, they need to register with the state.
