§ 6235 Attorney Diversion Program Costs

Key Takeaways

  • •Lawyers in the Attorney Diversion and Assistance Program usually have to pay for their own treatment and recovery.
  • •If a lawyer can't afford it, they might get help from a special fund paid for by a $10 fee from other lawyers.
  • •The program can charge a small fee to help cover its costs, but it won’t stop people who can’t pay from getting help.
  • •The money used to help those who can’t pay comes from the $10 fee, but the program makes sure there’s still enough money to run properly.

Example

A lawyer named Alex has a problem with alcohol and needs help. Alex doesn’t have much money and can’t pay for treatment.

Alex can still join the Attorney Diversion and Assistance Program. The program will use money from the $10 fee that other lawyers pay to help Alex get the treatment they need. Alex won’t be turned away just because they can’t afford it.
