§ 6153 Penalties For Violations

Key Takeaways

  • •If you break the rules in Section 6152(a) for the first time, you can go to jail for up to a year or pay a fine up to $15,000, or both.
  • •If you break the same rules again, you can go to jail for up to a year or even longer (2, 3, or 4 years) or pay the same fine, or both.
  • •If you work for the government (like a city or state job) and break these rules, you’ll lose your job *and* face the other punishments.

Example

A store owner sells cigarettes to kids under 18 (which breaks Section 6152(a)).

If it’s their first time, they could go to jail for a year or pay $15,000, or both. If they do it again, they could go to jail for even longer.
