§ 4128 Hospital Medication Packaging Rules

Key Takeaways

  • •A big hospital pharmacy can prepare medicines for patients in its own hospital and other nearby hospitals if they are owned by the same company.
  • •The other hospitals must be within 75 miles of the main hospital.
  • •All medicines must have a barcode on them.
  • •The hospitals must prove they are owned by the same company.

Example

Hospital A and Hospital B are both owned by the same company and are 50 miles apart. Hospital A's pharmacy prepares medicines with barcodes for patients in both hospitals.

This is allowed because the hospitals are under the same ownership and are within the 75-mile limit. The medicines also have barcodes as required.
