§ 3526 Expired License Renewal Limits

Key Takeaways

  • •If you don't renew your license for 5 years, you can't just renew it—you have to start over like it's your first time.
  • •To get a new license, you must not have done anything bad that would stop you from getting a license in the first place.
  • •You have to pass the same tests again, just like a new person applying for the first time.
  • •You also have to pay all the fees again, just like someone applying for the first time.

Example

Imagine you're a doctor's assistant, but you forget to renew your license for 6 years because you took a long break.

You can't just renew your old license. Instead, you have to apply for a brand-new one. This means you must pass all the tests again, pay all the fees again, and prove you haven’t done anything bad that would stop you from being a doctor’s assistant.

A person who fails to renew their license or approval within five years after its expiration may not renew it, and it may not be reissued, reinstated, or restored after that time has elapsed, but that person may apply for and obtain a new license or approval if they: (a) Have not committed any acts or crimes constituting grounds for denial of licensure under Division 1.5 (commencing with Section 475). (b) Take and pass the examination, if any, that would be required of them if application for licensure was being made for the first time, or otherwise establishes to the satisfaction of the board that, with due regard for the public interest, they are qualified to practice as a physician assistant. (c) Pay all of the fees that would be required as if application for licensure was being made for the first time. (Amended by Stats. 2024, Ch. 497, Sec. 18. (SB 1526) Effective January 1, 2025.)
