§ 29 Chemical Dependency Training Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •Therapists and counselors must learn about drug and alcohol problems to keep their license.
  • •They need to know how to spot signs of addiction in people and their families.
  • •They should learn how to help and where to send people for more help.
  • •They must understand programs like 12-step groups to guide patients better.

Example

A therapist notices their patient is always tired, misses appointments, and smells like alcohol. The patient’s family says they drink every night.

The therapist must know this could be a sign of alcohol addiction. They should talk to the patient about it and suggest help, like a 12-step program or rehab. This is part of their training to keep their license.
