§ 2278 Doctor Title Usage Rules

Key Takeaways

  • •Only real doctors (with a special certificate) can call themselves 'doctor' or use 'Dr.'
  • •If someone uses 'Dr.' but isn't a medical doctor, they must say what kind of doctor they are (like 'Dr. of Law' or 'Dr. of Education')
  • •If they don't say what kind of doctor they are, they're breaking the rules

Example

A person with a PhD in History calls themselves 'Dr. Smith' at work but doesn't say they're not a medical doctor.

This is against the rules because they didn't say what kind of doctor they are. They could get in trouble for pretending to be a medical doctor.
