§ 2184 Medical Licensing Exam Validity

Key Takeaways

  • •You must pass a written test to get a medical license in California.
  • •Your test scores are good for 10 years. After that, you might need to take another test.
  • •The 10-year limit can be extended if you have a good reason, like extra training or working as a doctor in another state.
  • •If your scores expire and you don’t get an extension, you’ll have to take a special test to prove you still know your stuff.

Example

A doctor passes their medical test in 2015 but doesn’t apply for a California license until 2026.

Since it’s been more than 10 years, their test scores are expired. They’ll need to take another test unless they get an extension for a good reason, like working as a doctor in another state.
