§ 17522 Blind Worker Product Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •If something says it's made by blind workers, at least 75% of the work must actually be done by blind people.
  • •You can't sell something as 'made by the blind' if it doesn't have a label or symbol showing that 75% of the work was done by blind workers.
  • •Breaking this rule can get you fined up to $1,000 or put in jail for up to a year.

Example

A company sells brooms with a label that says 'Made by Blind Workers' but only 50% of the work was done by blind people.

This is against the law because the label says it's made by blind workers, but not enough of the work was actually done by them. The company could get fined or someone could go to jail.
